Calls for Ideas Open for the Stand Up To Cancer-Farrah Fawcett Foundation Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Translational Research Team Grant

PHILADELPHIA — The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is now accepting applications for the Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C)-Farrah Fawcett Foundation Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Translational Research Team Grant that will offer up to $1 million in research funding over a three-year period. This grant opportunity is provided by SU2C and The Farrah Fawcett Foundation.

This grant provides three years of funding for a multidisciplinary, translational cancer research project that addresses critical problems in HPV-related cancers and that can deliver near-term patient benefit through investigation by a team of two expert investigators. HPV infection causes virtually all cervical cancers, and many anal, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. Research projects must be designed to include clear plans indicating how the work will be translated into the clinic and deliver near-term benefits to patients with HPV-related cancers. The team may be either inter- or intrainstitutional, and both scientists on the team must hold tenure-track academic appointments.

Proposals for the SU2C-Farrah Fawcett Foundation Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Translational Research Team Grant must describe plans indicating how the work will be translated into the clinic. To maximize creativity, innovation, and collaboration, the projects should be multidisciplinary and use modern biological tools to attack research questions in a coordinated way.

A SU2C-Farrah Fawcett Foundation Joint Scientific Advisory Committee (JSAC) will conduct a unique, interactive, rapid, and rigorous evaluation of the applications via a multistep scientific review process. The JSAC is comprised of highly accomplished, senior laboratory researchers and physician-scientists as well as advocates. The committee will be co-chaired by Waun Ki Hong, M.D., FACP, D.M.Sc. (Hon.) and Lawrence D. Piro, M.D.  Hong is division head and professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, an American Cancer Society professor, and a Samsung distinguished university chair in cancer medicine. Piro is the president and chief executive officer of The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute, and professor of clinical medicine, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California.
